SI's King: Boldin likely to be traded by July Mar. 11 - 12:05 PM et

SI.com's Peter King believes that Anquan Boldin will be an ex-Cardinal by July.

King notes that both the Giants and Eagles are "in position" to trade for Boldin. The Birds have three of the top 53 picks in the draft and the Giants draft three times in the top 60. King calls Philadelphia "a perfect fit."

Rams sign FB Karney to pave way for S-Jax Mar. 11 - 12:21 AM et

Rams agreed to terms with FB Mike Karney on a three-year, $3.6 million contract. The deal includes $1.2 million guaranteed.

St. Louis has searched for a punishing lead blocker since Scott Linehan inexplicably waived Madison Hedgecock in-season two years ago. Karney, 28, should have something left in the tank. He's not much of a threat with the ball in his hands, but only turns 28 this July and was an All Pro in 2006. Karney is used to playing in a dome and figures to help Steven Jackson.

Report: Cutler-Broncos situation gets worse Mar. 10 - 10:56 PM et

According to ESPN's account of Monday's conference call between Jay Cutler, his agent, and the Broncos, the situation went "from bad to worse."

Leave it to ESPN to drum up the dramatic. Reporter Bill Williamson says the sides are "now further apart than prior to (the meeting)." Coach Josh McDaniels reportedly refused to confirm or deny trade talks involving Cutler and Matt Cassel, although owner Pat Bowlen stated to Cutler that he "will not be traded." Williamson says Cutler now would rather be dealt if Denver won't commit to him long term. Broncos OTAs begin on Monday.

Report: LT, Chargers reach restructured deal Mar. 10 - 10:25 PM et

Yahoo Sports reports that LaDainian Tomlinson and the Chargers have agreed on a restructured contract that will keep Tomlinson in San Diego.

LT2 approved the deal Tuesday night with the backing of club president Dean Spanos. Part of his '09 salary ($6.725M) was converted to a "signing bonus" to save cap room, meaning LT put his ego aside and will make a less salary than Darren Sproles. He'll still get the full $6.725M, however. Tomlinson's 2010-2011 salaries are reduced, but he can earn the money back via incentives. LT will be in more of a timeshare in 2009, but he'll keep goal-line duties and could be undervalued in fantasy drafts. Sproles will only vulture work between the 20s.

Rams release 7-time Pro Bowl LT Orlando Pace Mar. 10 - 4:45 PM et

Rams released LT Orlando Pace.

The Rams tried trading Big O, but at 33 with three base salaries totaling $21.53M left on his contract, they found no takers. A seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All Pro, Pace is sure to find work elsewhere, quite possibly as a starter. The Eagles, Bengals, Steelers, Packers, Bears, and Raiders can all use blindside help. The move significantly increases the chances of St. Louis using the No. 2 overall pick on a tackle.

Patriots agree to 1-year deal with CB Bodden Mar. 10 - 3:26 PM et

Patriots agreed to terms with CB Leigh Bodden on a one-year contract.

After dealing Matt Cassel the Pats' top priority was upgrading the secondary and they've executed. Bodden returns to a mostly man-to-man scheme after failing to adjust to Detroit's heavy zone. He flashed shutdown ability earlier in his career with Cleveland and is only 27. Bodden brings needed size (6'1/192) to New England and will compete to start. With Shawn Springs, Ellis Hobbs, and Bodden at corner, the Pats' pass defense looks much improved.

Rams bar Holt, Pace from offseason program Mar. 10 - 2:32 PM et

The Sports Xchange's Howard Balzer reports that the Rams have uninvited Torry Holt and Orlando Pace to participate in their offseason program.

The Rams are trying to move on from the pricey duo, but this hurts their leverage in trade talks. Clearly, St. Louis isn't open to bringing back either in 2009. Holt reportedly hasn't heard from anyone in the organization since Steve Spagnuolo was hired as coach. It looks like Holt and Pace might both end up being released. Neither has been linked anywhere in a trade.

Report: 49ers rework Alex Smith's contract Mar. 10 - 12:00 PM et

The 49ers have reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal with QB Alex Smith.

The details aren't yet available, but it's expected to be for typical backup quarterback money at around $2-$3 million per season. Smith was due over $9 million for 2009, but he was never going to see that money. He's slated to "battle" Shaun Hill for the starter's job, but Hill has the upper hand -- and a much better track record.

Talks in final stages, LT likely to stay? Mar. 10 - 8:38 AM et

Beat writer Kevin Acee now believes that LaDainian Tomlinson will stay with the Chargers as talks enter the "final stages."

Acee predicted the opposite just a few days ago, but it now looks like LT will not have to take much of a 2009 pay cut from the $6.725 million he is due. Instead, the restructuring will largely affect his 2010 and 2011 salaries. LT and his agent are likely to find that they won't do any better on the open market, so look for the deal to get done soon.

Rams agree to $14 million deal with SS Butler Mar. 10 - 12:13 AM et

Rams agreed to terms with SS James Butler on a four-year, $14 million contract. Another $3 million is available through incentives.

Butler emerged as a starter for the Giants in 2007. The former undrafted free agent is an imposing specimen at 6'3/215, knows Steve Spagnuolo's system, and is a force against the run. He's not great in coverage, however, and St. Louis' pass rush is unlikely to give Butler as much recovery time as he had in New York. Butler, 26, can't be much worse than Corey Chavous, but he's also unlikely to be as effective with the Rams as he was as a Giant.
